The dark days are here which means Winter has fully taken hold. It’s time to adjust one’s wardrobe to dress for the time and weather. For me personally, winter is my least favourite time, it’s going to be damp and dark all the time. Winter is full of dark and short days, damp and sometimes icy roads. The shoes you wear during winter will have to handle cold, wet, and slippery conditions. They also must be comfortable, offer protection and style.
So, how do you find the best shoes for the winter months?
The shoes need to offer the following:
- Protection: Shoes should offer protection from the looming cold and wet conditions. Wet and cold feet can lead to discomfort and even health issues like chilblains and trench foot. Waterproof or water-resistant shoes keep your feet dry, whether it’s raining or snowing. Depending on the expected rain showers in your area, high ankle coverage shoes are also a good option to offer protection not just to your feet but to your legs too.
- Warmth: Insulated shoes or boots with shear lining keep your feet warm, preventing your body from losing heat through your extremities. This is particularly important during winter when temperatures can plummet.
Safety: Shoes should have good traction to prevent slips on icy or wet surfaces. You will need shoes with a rubber sole as it will reduce the risk of falls and injuries. Shoes with a thick sole are a great option for snowy or icy days. - Comfort: Shoes like Ugg’s are wide, made with suede for warmth and are comfortable to wear, but they can easily get damp leading to cold and uncomfortable feet. In this case, it would be best to get them waterproofed either online or by going to shoes stores that offer this service.
- Style: Gone are the days when your feet had to be comfortable at the expense of style. Shoes and boots today all have features of a good winter shoe while also being stylish. There are many options to choose from in this day and age so there is no excuse for inappropriate footwear.
