As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to fall, many people start to notice their feet feeling colder than usual. While chilly toes are common in winter, there are simple steps you can take to keep your feet warm, comfortable, and healthy throughout the colder months.
Choose Footwear That Keeps the Cold Out
One of the most effective ways to maintain warm feet is to wear shoes with a thick, insulating sole. This helps to keep the cold from floors, pavements and outdoor surfaces away from your feet.
You can also try:
- Thermal socks designed to retain heat
- Thermal insoles to add another layer of protection inside your shoes
However, it’s important that your footwear still has enough room. Shoes that are too tight can restrict blood flow, making cold feet worse rather than better.
Warm Up from the Inside
Keeping your whole body warm helps your extremities stay warm too. Focus on warming your core, as when the body is cold, it reduces blood flow to the hands and feet first.
Try:
- Wearing thermal layers or extra garments around your torso
- Eating warm meals and drinks
- Adding warming ingredients such as ginger, cayenne pepper and chillies to your cooking, which can naturally boost circulation
Supplements That May Support Circulation
Some natural supplements have been associated with improved blood flow. These include:
- Gingko Biloba
- Gamma Linoleic Acid (Omega-6)
- Vitamins C and E, which support blood vessel health
If you are taking prescribed medication or have existing health conditions, always check with your GP or pharmacist before starting any supplements.
Could It Be Raynaud’s?
If your cold hands or feet are very severe, painful, or accompanied by colour changes (white, blue, or red), you may have a condition called Raynaud’s phenomenon.
Raynaud’s is more common than many people realise, affecting as many as 1 in 6 people. Treatments and management strategies are available, so if you suspect Raynaud’s, it’s worth speaking to one of our podiatrists for personalised advice.
