May is Melanoma Awareness Month, a vital time to raise awareness about the dangers of skin cancer and the importance of early detection. At Randell’s Footcare, we’re proud to play our part in supporting this important campaign — especially when it comes to checking often-overlooked areas like the feet.
What Is Melanoma?
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from the pigment-producing cells known as melanocytes. While it’s one of the less common forms of skin cancer, it is also one of the most serious, particularly when diagnosed late.
Although many people check their faces, arms and backs for suspicious moles, the feet and lower legs are frequently forgotten — even though they are common sites for melanoma, especially in older adults.
Why Skin Checks on the Feet Are So Important
As podiatrists, we regularly examine the skin on the feet and ankles as part of routine care. This puts us in a unique position to spot unusual skin lesions early — even in places that are hard for patients to see themselves, such as the soles, between the toes, and around the nails.
Some of the warning signs we look for include:
- A mole or lesion that is asymmetrical or has irregular borders
- Colour changes or more than one colour within the same lesion
- A spot that is increasing in size, itching, bleeding, or not healing
- A dark streak or pigmentation under the toenail that wasn’t caused by trauma
Skin Lesion Checks at Randell’s Footcare
As part of our commitment to patient safety, we offer skin lesion checks at our Aylsham clinic. During these checks, our trained clinicians assess any moles, marks or skin changes of concern using clinical observation and dermatoscopy — a non-invasive tool that allows us to see structures beneath the skin’s surface.
If a lesion appears suspicious, we will provide guidance on the appropriate next steps, which may include referral to a GP or specialist dermatology service for further investigation.
What You Can Do This May
- Check your skin regularly — and don’t forget your feet!
- Wear sunscreen on exposed skin, including the tops of your feet, when outdoors
- Keep an eye on any moles or changes in pigmentation
- Book a skin lesion check if you notice anything unusual
