Nail Bracing: A Comfortable Solution for Painful Involuted Toenails

Nail bracing is an excellent technique designed to provide relief for those suffering from painful involuted toenails. An involuted nail is one that curves excessively, causing the sides to press against the surrounding skin. This can lead to discomfort, pain, and an increased risk of developing an ingrowing toenail.

How Does Nail Bracing Work?

The nail bracing procedure is quick, entirely painless, and often brings immediate relief. A small band of putty is applied to the base of the toenail, near the cuticle, and hardened under a blue light. The brace then remains in place as the nail grows, and it can even be painted over with nail varnish for a natural look.

Once the brace has grown halfway up the nail, a second band is applied to the base. Once both bands have fully grown out, the treatment is complete. In some cases, you may need to reapply occasionally to maintain comfort.

Effectiveness of Nail Bracing

In a recent survey conducted at our clinic, 78% of patients who underwent nail bracing experienced a significant reduction in their symptoms, with 30% reporting complete resolution. It can be a suitable alternative to nail surgery, particularly for those with underlying health conditions where surgery may not be advisable.

Who is Suitable for Nail Bracing?

Nail bracing is generally suitable for most individuals. However, it may not be appropriate in the following cases:

  • Active ingrowing toenails with open wounds
  • Partially detached nails
  • Fungal infections within the nail plate
