Nail bracing

Podiatrist wearing blue performing a toenail treatment
Clare Rushmer

Nail bracing is a fantastic technique developed to help painful involuted toenails become more comfortable and easier to manage. Involuted nails are when the shape is so curled that the sides press onto the skin causing pain, and making you susceptible to ingrowing toenails.

The brace is a quick and completely painless procedure. Patients often report an immediate sense of pressure relief when applied. It is a band of putty which is placed at the base of the toenail (next to the cuticle) and set under a blue light. This then stays in place, and can even be painted over with nail varnish. Once the band has grown halfway up the nail, a second band is applied at the base. Once both these bands have grown out, the treatment is complete. Sometimes a person may need an occasional band re-applied. This helps them to remain comfortable.

During a recent survey at the clinic, 78% of patients who have had this technique reported an improvement in their symptoms. With 30% obtaining a complete resolution. This can be used to avoid someone requiring nail surgery, for example if general health is not very good and nail surgery is not recommended. There are no health complications which would prevent nail bracing being suitable, however it isn’t suitable if you have an active ingrowing toenail (with an open wound), a partly detached nail or a fungus in the nail plate.

This treatment is currently available at our Aylsham clinic with Clare. Please call or email if you would like any further details.
