Whether you’re jetting off abroad or enjoying a staycation here in the UK, your feet will be putting in the miles this summer. From sandy beaches to city sightseeing, your feet work hard – so looking after them should be top of your packing list.
At Randell’s Footcare, we see a noticeable rise in foot problems during and after the summer holidays. To help you avoid discomfort and keep your feet happy wherever you go, here are our top holiday footcare tips:
1. Choose Supportive Footwear
Flip-flops might be convenient, but they offer very little arch support. Wearing them for long periods – especially on hard pavements or uneven terrain – can lead to foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and aching legs.
- Opt for sandals or summer shoes with arch support and cushioned soles.
- If you’re planning on walking a lot, take well-fitted trainers or walking shoes.
2. Prevent Blisters Before They Start
New or ill-fitting shoes can quickly lead to painful blisters, especially in hot weather. Prevent this by:
- Wearing shoes in before your trip
- Choosing moisture-wicking socks
- Using blister plasters or barrier sticks on pressure points
Pack a small foot first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes, and tape just in case.
3. Protect Your Feet Around Water
Swimming pools, communal showers and changing rooms can be hotspots for fungal infections like athlete’s foot or verrucae.
- Always wear flip-flops or pool shoes in communal areas.
- Dry your feet thoroughly after swimming – especially between the toes.
4. Don’t Forget Sun Protection
Your feet are just as prone to sunburn as any other part of your body – especially the tops and toes.
- Apply sunscreen generously to your feet (including between the toes and around the ankles).
- Reapply regularly if you’re walking or swimming.
5. Stay Hydrated and Keep Feet Cool
Swollen feet and ankles are a common complaint in hot weather, particularly during flights or long car journeys.
- Stay well hydrated throughout the day.
- Elevate your feet when you can and take breaks to stretch your legs if travelling.
- Cooling foot sprays or a cold water soak can also help reduce puffiness.
6. Watch Out for Cuts, Bites & Stings
Hot weather and barefoot walking can increase your risk of minor injuries. Keep an eye out for:
- Small cuts or grazes that may become infected
- Insect bites that cause swelling or irritation
- Sand or sea salt trapped under toenails
Clean wounds promptly and seek advice if anything becomes red, swollen, or painful.
7. Book in Before (or After) You Travel
If you’ve had any niggling problems like corns, cracked heels or ingrown toenails, we recommend booking a podiatry appointment before your trip so you can travel in comfort.
