Foot odour is a very common concern and, despite what many people think, it is not usually caused by poor hygiene.
In most cases, smelly feet are caused by bacteria. Our skin naturally has a microbiome – a collection of healthy bacteria that forms part of our protective barrier. However, sometimes one type of bacteria (or a non-native species) can overgrow. As these bacteria multiply and break down sweat on the skin, they produce unpleasant-smelling by-products.
This imbalance can develop even when feet are washed regularly. The issue often arises when the skin’s natural moisture balance is disrupted, either because feet are too sweaty or too dry.
What Can Help?
The good news is that foot odour caused by bacterial overgrowth is usually straightforward to treat.
A topical antibiotic, available on prescription, is often recommended. This typically comes as a gel or liquid that is applied daily for around two weeks. The treatment helps reduce the excess bacteria, allowing the skin’s natural balance to restore itself over time.
Alongside treatment, it’s important to address the underlying cause by improving moisture balance and foot care habits.
Simple Steps to Reduce Foot Odour
- Wear clean socks every day, ideally made from breathable materials such as cotton or bamboo
- Avoid wearing shoes without socks where possible
- Rotate footwear to allow shoes to dry fully between wears
- Keep feet clean and dry, particularly between the toes
- Use appropriate moisturisers or foot care products if your skin is very dry
In some cases, bacteria can linger in older footwear. If odour persists even after treatment, it may be necessary to replace shoes that cannot be fully cleaned.
