Why you should get your feet checked regularly

Jubilee Thobejane

Randell’s Footcare is a renowned clinic with seven strategically located branches serving the northern region of Norfolk County and Norwich city itself. The 2021 census by the Office for National Statistics revealed a significant 17.8% surge in individuals aged 65 and above. This demographic shift underscores the increasing demand for specialised foot care services, making clinics like Randell’s Footcare highly sought after.

Across all seven clinics, we provide a comprehensive range of routine treatments tailored to meet the diverse needs of our clientele. Our team comprises meticulously selected, fully qualified, and HCPC registered podiatrists boasting a remarkable collective experience of over 100 years in the field.

Regular foot check-ups are crucial for maintaining your foot health because many foot issues stem from neglect. Feet, unfortunately, are often overlooked, with many unaware that foot problems can escalate into debilitating and potentially life-threatening condition.

At our clinics, we frequently encounter two main issues. Firstly, corns and calluses gradually develop over time, significantly impacting the mobility of patients, particularly the elderly. Secondly, ingrown toenails pose a concern for both the young and the more mature. These conditions, typically stemming from neglect, tend to exacerbate if left untreated, potentially worsening over time. Hence, we firmly advocate that prevention is invariably superior to treatment.

Here are some practical steps you can take at home to ensure your feet receive the care they deserve:

1. Regularly inspect your feet: Not all foot conditions manifest with pain, so it’s essential to make a habit of examining your feet frequently, even if you don’t experience discomfort.

2. Keep your nails and feet clean: Your feet endure considerable pressure throughout the day, leading to perspiration. Washing your feet daily with soap and water is crucial. Pay special attention to cleaning between your toes with a dry cloth to prevent excess moisture buildup.

3. Choose appropriate footwear: The shoes you wear play a significant role in maintaining foot health. Opt for sensible shoes suitable for every occasion. When purchasing everyday shoes, consider the following:

  • Does the shoe have adequate insoles and outsoles to provide a barrier between your foot and the ground?
  • Do the shoes offer sufficient support to prevent collapsing or discomfort? Look for features like sturdy construction or supportive laces or velcro.
  • Ensure there is enough room in the toe area for comfortable movement.
  • Check if the heel provides stability to avoid potential issues.

By following these simple guidelines, you can take proactive steps to keep your feet happy and healthy.

What is involved in a Randell’s Footcare Podiatry appointment, what we do during the appointment, how long it takes, how if we find any issues we can help to resolve them for the patient:

At Randell’s Footcare, our initial 30-minute appointment begins with a comprehensive foot assessment, followed by a discussion about overall foot health and treatment for the primary concern. Depending on available time after addressing the primary issue, additional treatments for other complaints may be provided. Often, part of the treatment includes valuable foot care advice, and in some cases, referral to another professional may be necessary.

Our Routine appointments, also lasting 30 minutes, are tailored to each patient’s specific needs at the time. These appointments often include a routine vascular assessment to ensure thorough care and attention to detail.

How often should I visit the podiatrist?

For those with healthy feet, we recommend scheduling at least one visit to a podiatrist annually. However, if you have existing health issues related to your feet or lower limbs, we advise more frequent visits, typically every 8 to 12 weeks.

It’s important to note that individual circumstances may vary, and your podiatrist will provide personalised advice tailored to your specific needs during your appointment. They will assess your condition and recommend the most suitable frequency of visits to ensure optimal foot health and overall well-being.
